It then keeps going. Markets, labor, farmer knowledge, public policy, land rights, and decision-making all affect whether the biological design lasts. That breadth explains why the word can confuse a grower, researcher, and program officer in the same meeting. Each may be using it correctly. Wezel and colleagues traced three established uses in their 2009 review. Agroecology can be a science that studies ecological processes in agriculture, a body of practice that puts those processes to work, or a movement that connects them to social change. The science strand examines interactions among plants, animals, soils, water, climate, people, and institutions. Its unit of analysis can be a plot, a farm, a region, or a food system. A study of maize-legume competition fits. So does research on how procurement rules affect crop diversity or how land tenure changes a farmer's willingness to plant perennials. The practice strand turns those relationships into management. Crop rotation, mixed crops, integrated livestock, biological pest regulation, nutrient recycling, and locally adapted seed can all express agroecological principles. None earns the label by itself. The practices have to fit the farm's climate, soils, labor, equipment, markets, and knowledge. The movement strand adds questions of power and participation. Who defines the transition? Whose knowledge counts? Who controls seed, land, markets, and data? Who carries the risk while buyers or public programs claim the result? This strand overlaps with [Food Sovereignty](food-sovereignty.md), yet the terms aren't substitutes. Food sovereignty makes a rights and authority claim. Agroecology supplies a broader ecological, practical, and institutional frame. FAO's Ten Elements give policymakers and program designers a shared vocabulary. Its list is more explicit about input reduction, soil and animal health, biodiversity, economic diversification, fairness, connectivity, participation, and land and natural-resource governance. The two frameworks overlap, but they aren't checklists that certify the same thing. They are lenses for designing and assessing a transition. > **Confidence: medium:** The science-practice-movement framing and the FAO and HLPE frameworks are well > established. Outcomes remain context-sensitive, and researchers, movements, > governments, and operators disagree about how much social and political content > the term must carry. ## Why It Matters For an operator, agroecology changes the unit of design. A cover crop is no longer an isolated input decision. Its value depends on the rotation, planting and termination windows, livestock access, weed pressure, water, and equipment. Buyer demand and the cash needed to survive a poor transition year matter too. Agroecology doesn't prescribe one bundle. It requires the bundle to make sense as a system. That matters when one improvement creates trouble elsewhere. A lower-input crop plan may cut fertilizer purchases but add labor at the wrong time. A diversified rotation can improve biological regulation and still fail if no buyer takes the added crop. A local seed choice may fit drought risk but miss a processor's specification. Agroecology asks whether the biological, operating, and market pieces hold together. For a funder, the term is a diligence prompt. A proposal for an "agroecological transition" should name the starting system, the practices changing, the people who designed them, and the outcomes sought. It should also set a measurement window and show who pays and who benefits. If the evidence file contains one practice and a broad label, it has slipped toward [Single-Practice Regenerative Claim](single-practice-claim.md). For policy staff and standards designers, agroecology widens performance beyond one environmental indicator. Soil cover or nitrogen use can be measured, but so can farm income, dietary diversity, market access, participation, and control over natural resources. The wider frame doesn't remove tradeoffs. It makes them harder to hide behind a single carbon, yield, or enrollment number. ## How It Shows Up **FAO's Ten Elements.** FAO uses the elements as an organizing frame across farm design, knowledge, culture, economics, and governance. A ministry or development program can use them to find a lopsided intervention. A project may score well on recycling and input efficiency while giving producers little voice in contracts or monitoring. The framework doesn't make that project worthless. It shows where the transition is thin. **HLPE's 13 principles.** HLPE translates the broad frame into principles that work as program questions. Input reduction and recycling speak to farm metabolism. Fairness, participation, and land governance speak to institutions. Connectivity and economic diversification speak to the routes between farms, processors, and markets. Reading them together keeps a field practice from standing in for a food-system result. **The Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation.** FAO's Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation (TAPE) turns the Ten Elements into a structured characterization and multidimensional performance process. Users examine the operation in context, describe its transition, assess outcomes, and interpret the result with the people involved. TAPE is useful for comparison and learning. It isn't a certification seal, and a score can't by itself prove that one practice caused an observed outcome. **A farm transition dossier.** A credible dossier might connect intercropping, cover crops, biological pest management, a longer rotation, and a regional buyer. It would also record labor, margin, nutrient use, yield variability, farmer decision rights, and who paid for new equipment or market development. The biological practices are visible. The market and governance terms decide whether they endure. ## Caveats and Open Questions The first problem is definitional breadth. A scientist may use agroecology for ecological research in farming. A grower may mean a set of management practices. A movement organization may treat food sovereignty, fairness, and producer control as inseparable from the term. Productive work starts by stating which meaning is in use. Treating one as the only legitimate meaning turns a useful disagreement into a naming fight. Context dependence limits recipe-making. Diversification, recycling, and lower input dependence are principles, not fixed doses. Their expression differs across a mechanized grain farm, a pastoral system, a tropical smallholding, and a greenhouse. Much of the formal evidence also comes from particular regions and production systems. A result that travels as a principle still needs local testing as a practice. Frameworks can invite checklist behavior. Ten Elements, 13 principles, or a TAPE profile can discipline a program, but none replaces causal evidence or local judgment. A high score can hide poor baseline data, uneven participation, weak market demand, or an outcome window too short for soil and livelihood change. Measurement should open the next question, not close the file. The social strand requires attribution. Peasant and Indigenous communities developed many farming and governance practices long before academic institutions grouped them under agroecology. Programs shouldn't strip that lineage into anonymous technique. They should name the communities and institutions whose knowledge they use, respect their decision rights, and avoid treating participation as a workshop added after the design is finished. Watch the scope of the claim. Agroecology can describe a serious whole-system transition. The term can also be stretched over one low-input practice, one grant, or one buyer program. Ask what changed in the biology, the operation, the market, and the governance.
